Certificate Course in Phytochemistry, Medicinal Plants & Bioinformatics for Drug Design

Course Overview

Medicinal plants have served as one of the most important sources of therapeutic compounds throughout human history. More than 25% of modern medicines are derived directly or indirectly from plant secondary metabolites. Advances in phytochemistry, molecular biology, and computational biology have revolutionised natural product drug discovery. Bioinformatics and computer-aided drug design (CADD) enable researchers to identify bioactive compounds, predict their interactions with disease targets, evaluate pharmacokinetic properties, and accelerate lead discovery while reducing time and cost.

This interdisciplinary certificate course integrates botany, phytochemistry, medicinal plant research, pharmacognosy, molecular biology, microbiology, biotechnology, biochemistry, and bioinformatics. Students will gain knowledge of medicinal plant diversity, phytochemical extraction and characterisation, molecular docking, ADMET prediction, and virtual screening for drug discovery.

What Will You Learn?

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

1. Understand the importance of medicinal plants and phytochemicals in healthcare.

2. Explain the chemistry, biosynthesis, and biological activities of plant secondary metabolites.

3. Perform extraction, qualitative screening, and quantitative estimation of phytochemicals.

4. Retrieve phytochemical and protein data from biological databases.

5. Evaluate drug-likeness and pharmacokinetic properties of phytochemicals.

6. Understand the role of artificial intelligence and bioinformatics in natural product drug discovery.

Certificate

Students who complete the course requirements and assessments will receive a Savitr Bioscience Certificate of Completion in the Certificate Course in Phytochemistry, Medicinal Plants & Bioinformatics for Drug Design.

The certificate recognises successful completion of the course and participation in its prescribed learning and practical components.
